The Eyes of Timor-Leste

The world's newest country beats the world's leading infectious cause of blindness with four plain tools, and in September 2026 a letter from Geneva says so.

Level A1 · Beginner

Timor-Leste is born in 2002. Its old enemy: trachoma, an eye infection. Flies and dirty hands carry it.

After many infections the lashes turn in. Every blink hurts. The world goes dark. People are afraid.

Four tools. An operation turns the lashes out; the pain stops. Antibiotics clear the infection. Every child washes its face. With clean water.

On 3 September 2026 the World Health Organization says: no more trachoma here. The 33rd country. The last in its region.
