The Jar on the Ward

In 1928 an English doctor in Bombay cured exhausted pregnant women with a jar of cheap yeast spread, and what she found is now advice for every pregnancy.

Level A1 · Beginner

It is 1928 in Bombay, India. Lucy Wills is a doctor from England. Many pregnant women are pale and very tired.

The women are poor and work in factories. Lucy asks: what do they eat? Their food is poor too.

She gives them yeast spread from a jar. The women get better. Later the vitamin in it gets a name: folic acid.

Today doctors say: take folic acid every day. Start before you are pregnant. Ask your doctor or midwife.
