An Hour of Reading

A French thinker who helped design modern government kept a smaller, more personal remedy in his notebook.

Level A1 · Beginner

Montesquieu was a French thinker. He lived long ago. He wrote big ideas about government.

But he also wrote one small sentence. People still copy it into notebooks today.

He wrote: "I have never had a sorrow that an hour of reading did not take away."

This does not mean books fix every problem. It means something smaller and true: a book can lend you other eyes for one hour. Your worry gets quieter.

You do not need a big book. Ten pages tonight is enough. Try it, and see.
