The Ocean Clean-Up Robots

Small floating robots are learning to collect plastic before it reaches the sea.

Level A1 · Beginner

Every year, a lot of plastic goes into rivers. Then it goes into the ocean. It is very hard to collect plastic from the sea. So engineers had an idea. They wanted to stop the plastic earlier — in the rivers.

They built small machines. The machines use solar power. They float on the water like little boats. Each machine has a simple barrier. It guides plastic bottles and bags into a basket. It does not hurt fish.

The first machines worked in a busy river near a big city. In one month, they collected many kilograms of plastic. This plastic did not reach the ocean.

The project is interesting because of the idea, not just the technology. Instead of cleaning the whole ocean, the team cleans a few rivers. These rivers carry most of the plastic.

Now the engineers share their plans for free. Other cities can build the same robots. A small robot in a river is good news this year.

The same story, one level up

Every Journeva story exists at four levels — same plot, same characters, richer language each step. Here is how this one begins at each level.

A2 · Elementary

Every year, millions of tons of plastic waste travel down rivers and end up in the ocean. Once it reaches the sea, it is almost impossible to collect. …

B1 · Intermediate

Every year, millions of tons of plastic waste flow down rivers and out into the ocean. Once it reaches the open sea, it is almost impossible to collect. …

B2 · Upper intermediate

Each year, millions of tons of plastic waste are carried down rivers and out into the ocean, where, once dispersed across open water, they become virtually impossible to retrieve. Rather than attempting to tackle the problem at sea, a team of engineers chose to intervene far earlier — right at the source, in the rivers themselves. …
