A Pot of Lentils

The cheapest good dinner in the world takes one pot, twenty minutes, and a neighbor who knows the trick.

Level A1 · Beginner

Priya is new in the city. For six days, she eats only toast. Then a good smell comes from next door. She knocks. Her neighbor Anand looks at her toast. "Come," he says. "I will show you the cheapest good dinner in the world."

Wash one cup of red lentils. Put them in a pot with three cups of water and a pinch of turmeric. Cook for twenty minutes. The lentils become soft and gold. Add salt.

Now the trick. Heat two spoons of oil in a small pan. Add one spoon of cumin seeds and two cloves of garlic. Pour the hot oil over the lentils.

Eat it with rice or bread. Anand says: "A pot for four people costs less than one coffee."

The next evening, Priya cooks the lentils herself. She never eats toast for dinner again.
