The First Milk

Why the strange golden drops in the first days are exactly what a newborn ordered.

Level A1 · Beginner

Selin had a new baby. The baby was two days old. Selin looked at her milk. It was not much milk. It was thick and gold, like honey.

Selin was worried. "Is my milk wrong?" she thought. "There is so little."

In the morning, the midwife came. She looked at the baby. She looked at the milk. She smiled.

"Nothing is wrong," said the midwife. "A new baby's stomach is very small — like a cherry! Your body knows this. It makes the right amount, and it makes it strong."

The golden milk is called colostrum. It is small, but it protects the baby. Selin was not worried anymore. Her body knew exactly what to do.
