The Region That Changed Its Bread

In 1972 a part of Finland where more men died of heart disease than anywhere else in the world started changing what went on its bread.

Level A1 · Beginner

So it's 1972, in North Karelia, in Finland. More men die of heart disease here than anywhere else. Families are scared.

They ask for help, and a young doctor comes: Pekka Puska. He has no new pill, just a plan.

Almost everyone puts butter on their bread. Slowly, people change to a plant spread and low-fat milk. They eat less salt and more vegetables and berries.

Years later, far fewer men die of heart disease. Ask your doctor about salt.
