It is Sunday morning. Colette lives in a small village. She buys bread on Thursday. On Sunday, the bread is very hard. But Colette does not throw it away. In her kitchen, nothing is lost.
The dish is called pain perdu: lost bread. You need two eggs, a glass of milk, a spoon of sugar, a piece of butter, and the old bread.
Break the eggs into a bowl. Add the milk and the sugar. Mix with a fork. Cut the bread into thick slices. Put each slice in the bowl. The bread drinks the milk. It becomes soft.
Melt the butter in a pan. Put the slices in. Cook two minutes. Turn them. The edges become gold. The kitchen smells like caramel.
Colette puts the slices on a plate with a little sugar. Her grandson eats three. The bread from Thursday is not lost. It is breakfast.
