A Pan of Red and Gold

One pan, a rich tomato sauce, and eggs poached right inside it — breakfast served straight to the table.

Level A1 · Beginner

In Tunisia, in Morocco, in Israel, breakfast comes in one hot pan. It goes right to the table.

This is shakshuka. First, cook onions and peppers in a pan. Cook them soft.

Add tomatoes. Cook them slowly. The sauce turns red and thick. It smells warm and rich.

Now, make small holes in the sauce with a spoon. Break an egg into each hole. Cover the pan. Wait a few minutes.

The eggs turn soft and golden. Bring the hot pan to the table. Everyone takes bread and dips it in. Nobody needs their own plate.
