Two Hours of Green

A doctor on a windy island writes a prescription with no pills on it: two hours a week among green things, in any pieces you like.

Level A1 · Beginner

Ruth lives on a windy island in Shetland, in the north of Scotland. She is tired all the time. One morning she goes to the doctor.

The doctor listens to her heart. She does not give Ruth pills. She gives her a calendar of ideas. Watch the sea. Walk to the old lighthouse. Find a bird you cannot name.

"Two hours a week," the doctor says. "Outside, among green things. In any pieces you like." Since 2018, doctors in Shetland can give this nature prescription.

A study from 2019 asked twenty thousand people in England about their week. People with two hours in nature felt healthier and happier. One long visit or many short ones made no difference.

So Ruth tries it. She watches the sea. She walks to the lighthouse. She finds a small brown bird on the hill. By Sunday, Ruth feels lighter.
