The Upside-Down Tart

From 1894 two sisters ran a station hotel in France, and one of them baked her apple tart the wrong way up: here is the true story and the recipe.

Level A1 · Beginner

It is 1894 in France. Two sisters have a small hotel. Stéphanie Tatin cooks. Her apple tart is upside down.

Put butter and sugar in a pan. Cook them until golden. Add apple halves. Cook them slowly.

Put pastry on top. Bake for thirty minutes. Now put a plate on the pan. Turn it over. Careful, it is hot!

People say the tart is a mistake. That is only a story. Today the tart has the sisters' name.
