The Wallet on the Train

A tired traveler finds a stranger's wallet full of cash — and has to make a quick choice.

Level A1 · Beginner

Mateo was going home on the last train. It was after a long day. He was tired. He wanted to sleep. Then he saw something under the seat. It was a brown wallet.

He picked it up. He opened it slowly. Inside, there was a lot of money. There was a train ticket. There was a photo of a happy family. No name. No phone number. Just money and a photo.

For a moment, Mateo thought about the money. Nobody saw him find it. He could keep it. Nobody would know.

But he kept thinking about the photo. Someone was looking for this wallet. That person felt worried and sad. So at the next station, Mateo gave the wallet to a train worker. He told the worker where he found it.

One week later, Mateo got a short letter. It was from the owner of the wallet. She said thank you. "You did not just give back my money," she wrote. "You showed me that people are still kind."
